Do Good On The Outside

Who says you have to be a grown up to change the world? Children really can make a positive difference in their own world’s and this section of The Spark is dedicated to inspiring our youngest minds to do just that. You don’t always need a grown up and you’ll be surprised by how many things you can do to make a real difference.

We are going to be building a list of 100 Actions Kids Can Take to Create a World to be Proud Of. If you have any ideas for the list, we’d love to hear them; get in touch at

Action #1. Stop using plastic straws

You’re oiut in a café or a restaurant and ask for a drink - it arrives with a big straw in it. STOP!! Do you feel brave enough to say NO THANK YOU. I am giving up straws. This is a good thing to do for two reasons. First, it means you aren’t using a straw that can end up on the sea and second, it' says to all the grown-ups around you that you are an EARTHLOVER and a WORLDCHANGER and it helps them to think again about all the straws we use. Here are some facts to help you:

  • 500,000,000 plastic straws are thrown away everyday.

  • Straws kill marine life. When straws end up in the ocean, they break down and ocean wildlife, like sea turtles will consume the plastic thinking it’s food. Marine animals can’t process plastic and can die from a stomach full of plastic.

  • There will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050.

  • Plastic straws are NOT recyclable. Straws have to been thrown away, which means they can eventually end up in the ocean.
