Stib Meets…

Book shop owner, Sheryl Shurville,  owner of two lovely independent bookshops; one in Chorleywood and the other in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire.

Stib Meets…

Sheryl's book stores are very much part of the local community and welcome many high-profile authors as part of their busy events schedule. Past guests have included Melissa Hemsley, Greg James, Ruth Jones and David Walliams. The stores also play a big part in the annual Chorleywood Lit Fest and last Christmas, Sheryl initiated a highly successful Gift a Book campaign to donate 350 books for underprivileged children in the area and spread the joy of reading.  Here Sheryl talks about her former life as a nurse and what made her swap that life for one in literacy.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a nurse and started my training as soon as I could when I was 18 years old. I trained at The Middlesex Hospital in London which has subsequently been closed. My speciality was in Accident and Emergency. I was also a midwife and trained and worked as a midwife at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow. Latterly I worked as a practice nurse. I thoroughly enjoyed nursing it was a privilege to be a nursed and meet so many lovely people.

What advice would you give yourself as a child?

Aim high

What was your 'big idea' which inspired you to set up your business?

There was already a bookshop here, I joined a friend, it was my love of reading that made me change careers from being a nurse for over 20 years

What do you say to yourself when you need a confidence boost?

You can do it

What's your favourite Stib word?

Big Thinker
